Dramatism

The other day I was looking through some videos of masters in photography, some interviews and I caught one of Ralph Gisbon.

Ralph Gisbon is a known photographer of portraits and life, his images are controversial, full of dramatist, movement and life. His portraits are addictive and sometimes you can feel embarrassed but you cannot stop looking at them, they have a lot of power.

In this video, you can see it beneath, he answers question about his photography, how he started, why he shoot in film, who admires, etc but the answer that got me was when the interviewer asked him why he shoot in black and white.

He could have answered that because he likes, because it creates tension and contrast, but his answer really get my think:

Why I shoot in Black and White?

Because reality, so called reality is 100% scale, three dimensions and color.

If you make a black and white photograph of reality you are gonna reduced into two dimensions, you are gonna reduce scale and convert it into black and white; that’s three steps away from so called reality.

Obviously color is just two steps away ‘cause you maintain the color of reality; so in this three abstractions, in this three steps a lot of drama emerges.

This is the alchemy, the mystery of black and white photography, is why charge is so highly, is why black and white photography continues to fascinate us, and continues to be a relevant issue.”

Ralph Gibson

He got me think about Black and White photography and its realism, so I decided that my next session I will shoot it in black and White. I was lucky that the model Cecile Greve has a lot of presence in the scene and the combination of her blond hair and the black background helped a little.

I edited the images both in black and white and color, at first, but the rest I decided to edit them just in black and white.

As is true that black and white not always works for everything, in this case I think that gives the image more power than color.

Animo Berta!!!
